Special offers for kids and families at the Oktoberfest.
The Munich Oktoberfest has always been a land of milk and honey for children. Carousels, rollercoasters, shooting galleries, roasted almonds and the many, many lights that illuminate the Wiesn from early evening onwards have made children's eyes light up for generations. Child-friendly attractions such as children's carousels, play booths and fairground rides are so evenly distributed across the fairground that they are easy to find even without a map. However, children and young people under the age of 16 are only allowed on the fair grounds after 8 p.m. if accompanied by a parent or guardian.
As there are also many offers for families with children at the Wiesn that are not obvious at first glance, we would like to summarize them on this page.
Ban on Bags and Baby Carriages
Especially for families, a very unpleasant aspect of visiting the Wiesn was unfortunately added in 2016 - the general ban on bags. Only small bags with a capacity of less than three liters may be taken onto the festival grounds. So if you are traveling with a stroller or buggy, you are well advised to stow the necessary utensils there. Although the KVR may have de facto abolished this tradition with the bag ban, we would like to remind you that you are still allowed to bring your own food to the beer gardens. The Weißbiergarten at Familienplatz even has a microwave to cater for the little ones.
The rules for baby carriages have not changed in recent years. From Sunday to Friday, they are no longer permitted after 6 p.m., and generally not permitted on Saturdays and public holidays. They can be handed in for €3 at all luggage storage facilities, which are easy to find at the entrances. On the Wiesn itself, there are baby carriage parking spaces at the Familienplatzl as well as at the entrance to the Oidn Wiesn and at its puppet theater.
Several businesses offer baby changing and breastfeeding rooms. There is a public room for this in the festival management behind the Schottenhamel-Festhalle.
Oide Wiesn
The Oide Wiesn is particularly geared towards families. Children up to the age of 14 have free admission, adults pay four euros. All (historical) rides there cost just €1.50. Particularly noteworthy is the free Munich Marionette Theater, which shows one of four different plays every hour between 11 am and 6 pm.
In addition, the Oide Kinderwiesn in the museum tent offers historical Wiesn attractions such as the trouser race, beer mug slalom and skittles.
Family Days
The two Oktoberfest Tuesdays have been family days for decades. Ride prices are reduced until 7 pm - although often to the same price as during Mittagswiesn - and most stands offer special family day deals. The legendary Devil's Wheel is particularly popular on these days - after all, children have free admission.
As a rule, the stalls also take part in the family day and advertise special offers. If you want to take a break with the children, you can also do so in the tents. In addition to the regular offers for children, there are also some that are only valid on Family Days.
We have compiled various special offers on our special Family Days page.
Mittagswiesn
Most rides and stalls discount their prices until 3 pm. Low-price lunchtime offers in the tents are now more the rule than the exception. You can find an overview of these special offers on our Mittagswiesn special page.
Children's Offers in the Beer Tents 2024
Children are generally also allowed in the beer tents. Only after 8 p.m. are children under six excluded from the tents. In addition to the special offers already mentioned, which are only valid on family days, many landlords also offer regular children's meals, some of which are really well priced. Unfortunately, the “family drink” for €3.50 introduced in many tents in 2017 has now almost completely disappeared.
Bräurosl has at least partially accepted our criticism of the children's offers and (significantly) lowered the prices for Kasspatzn and Rahmschwammerl. Unfortunately, there are still no offers for difficult eaters.
