The 190th Oktoberfest began in hot but relatively relaxed conditions.

Almost half a million visitors are said to have found their way to the 190th Munich Oktoberfest on the opening weekend. Although the queues at the entrances to the festival grounds were long and some people had already been queuing since the evening before, it wasn't necessary to wait long to get a seat. By the time the queues had been cleared, there were still free seats in many tents. In fact, some people seem to have used the early afternoon to go swimming. It didn't get really crowded until later on Saturday. Even in the afternoon, some tent entrances were still open.

Photos of the magnificent entry of the landlords and breweries and the traditional costume and riflemen's parade can be found on the corresponding special pages. After the parade, many brass bands could be seen playing and marching on the festival grounds. This is one of the reasons why the first Sunday is the most beautiful of all the festival days for many people.
