The 187th Munich Oktoberfest is finally set to take place in 2022.
It has been an open secret since last week and has finally been confirmed today: the 187th Munich Oktoberfest will finally take place, in its third attempt, after two years of cancellations due to the pandemic.
„I have decided to instruct the administration today to initiate the organization of the Oktoberfest 2022 without restrictions and without restricted access.”
This was the phrase wiesndamisch all over the world were waiting for.
Munich’s mayor Dieter Reiter said in a press conference that this was a hard decision based on two different angles: the political and the infectiologist one.
Due to the war in Ukraine, Reiter decided to not visit the Frühlingsfest that is currently held at Theresienwiese. As no one knows what the situation will be in September, he said he couldn’t cancel the Oktoberfest for political reasons. Everyone has to decide individually whether they want to visit a volksfest.
From an infectiologist standpoint, Reiter couldn’t have imagined an Oktoberfest without restrictions on access in January. As the legal framework has changed, it’s not possible to implement restrictions anymore, even though he and Germany’s minister of health think it would be wise to do so.
Therefore, the Oktoberfest 2022 will take place without any unusual restrictions.
